Times of Change

Artistic Perspectives and Cultural Crossings in Nineteenth-Century Dance

Edited by Irene Brandenburg, Francesca Falcone, Claudia Jeschke & Bruno Ligore

What are the recurring and emerging ideas regarding nineteenth-century dance practices and performances? How do we understand the complexity of the era’s dance networks? How did dancers deal with geographical and social mobility? Which practices led to a transformation of their artistic habits? How did the political events and technological novelties of the day generate fruitful cultural crossings? How did the horizon of expectations change over the span of the century? And how do today’s scholars approach the abundance of pre-existing histories?

Times of Change represents a journey through the dance of the long nineteenth century in Western countries. The volume follows neither a linear trajectory nor a chronological evolution, but a multi-directional path among the events, the spaces, and the mobilities of dance artists, whose activities intertwined and overlapped in multiple occasions.

The book reflects the gathering of dance scholars at an international conference held at the Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg in 2019. Their contributions are grouped in four thematic areas: Retracing Artists’ Stories, Reviewing Multiple Concepts of Dance and Dancing, Displaying Dance Sceneries and Understanding Strategies of Decoding Dance. The volume is enriched by appendices and a detailed index that help readers navigate the many biographical crossings.

The nineteen texts and the illustrations found in the volume (the fourth issue in the AIRDanza series) offer an overview of a century that, despite being relatively recent, remains to be rediscovered and reframed in light of the complex circulations of dancers and changes in dance practice that have given impetus to the present world.
